The Riley family business originally made bicycles, then motorcycles, followed by motor tricycles which led to Percy Riley making his first car between 1896 and 1898, but four-wheeled cars were not offered to the public until 1905. Riley cars were produced right through the vintage period and in the '30's their Brooklands, Monaco, Imp, M.P.H., Sprite and Kestrel models were well known. Rileys were regularly seen in competition at Le Mans, Brooklands and Shelsley Walsh. In 1937 Riley was taken over by Lord Nuffield and became part of Morris Motors. In the '50's Rileys continued to be made, the RMA, RME, RMB/F, Pathfinder and 2.6. Later the Riley name was used on upmarket versions of the Mini and Morris Minor, in particular the 1.5 Saloon which is popular with enthusiasts.
