Rover overview
Rover made bicycles and motorcycles before moving on to cars in the early 1900's and produced an excellent range of cars through the vintage period and the 1930's. During the war Rover played a major part by making aero engine components and was even involved in the development of Whittle's revolutionary jet engine. Post war Rover continued with basically the same cars until they introduced the P3/P4 series, 60, 75, 80, 90 and 105. In 1959 this was joined by the P5 with 3-litre engine and later with the ex-Buick 3.5 litre V8, and in 1963 the P6 with 2000/2200 cc engines and later the V8 again. In 1967 Rover was acquired by Leyland which became BMC which became British Leyland. The P series cars were axed and replaced by the SD1 and the Land Rover/Range Rover range. Subsequently British Leyland was nationalised, then sold to British Aerospace, then to BMW. They disposed of it into private hands and it floundered. Rover-it's over. Over the years Lucas, SU and others supplied parts for Rovers, many of them being parts common to cars being built by other manufacturers.
