Rolls-Royce overview
Before he ever built a car, Henry Royce was a leading electrical engineer with over 200 patents to his name and a flourishing business. His fellow directors persuaded him to buy a car but he was so dissatisfied with it that he proceeded to build his own. This was shown to the Hon. Charles Rolls, a 'motor car dealer', who was impressed, both with Henry and his car, and he agreed to buy all the cars Royce could make and that they should be called Rolls-Royce. From 1908 Rolls-Royces were made in Derby, as were the aero engines, but when war came a shadow factory for building the famous Merlin aero engines was opened in Crewe. After the war the Crewe factory became the home for car production, which continued until the Rolls-Royce name was sold to BMW who have set up manufacture of the current range of cars at Goodwood.

Over the years Lucas, SU and others supplied parts to Rolls-Royce, particularly for the Crewe built cars, the Silver Wraith, Silver Dawn, Silver Cloud, Silver Shadow and their Bentley sisters, the Mk VI, R Type, S Type, T Type, many of them being parts common to cars being built by other manufacturers.
