Morris overview
William Morris started making cars in 1913 and continued very successfully through the vintage period, famous names being Cowley and Oxford, but the best known Morris now is probably the post-war Morris Minor which was designed by Alec Issigonis and launched in 1948. It was initially powered by a 918 cc side valve engine but received the 803 cc overhead unit in 1953. Later the engine size was increased to 948 and then to 1098 cc. The Morris Minor continued in production until 1971. Nearly everyone of a certain age has experience of owning or at least driving a Morris Minor! After that Morris's were mostly re-badged Austins, the only difference being that they were assembled at Cowley, Oxford while Austins were assembled at Longbridge. The last Morris left the works in 1984. Over the years Lucas, SU and others supplied parts for Morris's, many of them being parts common to cars being built by other manufacturers.
