Lotus overview
The first Lotus was a special built from old Austin 7 pieces, the second a mixture of Austin and Ford parts, the third a racer, so clever and so fast that the rules of it's racing class had to be re-written! Then in 1953 Colin Chapman and a few friends started production of the Mark 6, sold in kit form. In 1958 this was developed to become the famous Lotus Seven, the design of which was later sold on. Lotus's were regularly seen in competition, often driven by Chapman himself, and he realised that to compete at a higher level his cars would need a full width body so he joined forces with Frank Costin, a skilled aircraft designer, which resulted in a series of lightweight, brilliantly packaged cars with low drag bodywork, culminating in the Eleven. In 1957 a Lotus Eleven with 750 cc engine won the Index of Performance at Le Mans and came 14th overall averaging 90 mph! From these cars came a series of classic road cars, Elite, Elan, Elan +2, Europa, Excel, Esprit and Lotus Cortina. Colin Chapman was expert at 'pirating' components from other manufacturers for use in the build of his cars. It is said that he had a scales on his desk where he weighed everything! It comes as no surprise that many Lucas parts are found, together with SU and others. We stock and supply many of these items, to find them look under the appropriate heading. Included are a number of parts specific to Lotus cars. These specific parts, accessories and books are listed below: If you are running a Lotus or are involved in restoration of Lotus's we hope you will find this website useful. It should be noted that we also offer to the Lotus owner rear view mirrors, sun visors, clothing for open cars, oils and other consumables. Enjoy your motoring!
