Lagonda overview
In 1900 Wilbur Gunn made his first motorcycle for sale and in 1908 his first car which he named Lagonda after his Company. He was an American living in England and the name Lagonda came from from a district in his homeland. Lagonda grew rapidly and produced many well engineered cars through the vintage period in its factory in Staines. Motor sport was used for publicity and development culminating in winning the Le Mans 24 hours race in 1935. At this time Lagonda was taken over by Alan Good, who brought in W.O.Bentley as Technical Director. He introduced a number of improvements to the existing cars and oversaw the design of a V12 engine, and improvements to the six-cylinder which became the LG6. After the war Lagonda was bought by David Brown and the six-cylinder became the basis of the engine used in the DB2 Aston Martin. Since then the Lagonda name has continued, being used by Aston Martin for larger, more specialised versions of its cars.
