Cobra overview
Carroll Shelby had a successful racing career culminating in winning the Le Mans 24 hour race in 1959 at the wheel of an Aston Martin. Retired from racing he talked Ford into letting him have a couple of V8 engines and he hit on the idea of fitting a V8 into the well designed and manufactured AC chassis. After many visits to Thames Ditton in England a chassis was beefed-up to take the greater power and torque of the V8 and the Cobra was born. AC shipped the chassis to Los Angeles and Shelby fitted the power trains. Success in racing brought the Cobra to the attention of enthusiasts and that attention has never gone away. Relatively speaking it is an easy car of which to make a replica. Its simple construction and a fibreglass body don't present too many problems, and electrical and mechanical components are not hard to find. In fact, it can be difficult to tell a replica Cobra from an original.
