Caterham overview
Colin Chapman's first real 'production' sports car was the Lotus 7 introduced in 1958, itself a development of everything that had gone before at Lotus. The concept of tubular chassis, aluminium bodywork and cycle-type wings became the essential simple lightweight sports car for the enthusiast. Despite Chapman's own lack of interest, it continued in production until 1973 when the production rights were handed over to Graham Nearn of Caterham Cars, the longest standing and most passionate Lotus 7 sales outlet. The name Caterham was adopted and the new owners quickly began applying their own engineering improvements in the areas of both chassis and engines and have since developed the full potential of the concept. Today the Caterham is a range of cars, much more sophisticated, using even lighter materials like carbon-fibre and offered with much more powerful engines. A continuing story!
Colin Chapman was expert at 'pirating' components from other manufacturers for use in the build of his cars and this practice has continued with the Caterham. It comes as no surprise that Lucas parts are found, together with SU and others. We stock and supply many of these items, to find them look under the appropriate heading.
