Cooling Off

Posted on March 17, 2011March 28, 2019 by Holden News

In this video we look at a number of ways to manage the ever present requirement of engine cooling. We feature three products that will assist in the process of heat management.

Cooling Off

In this case we have the Holden Works Caterham fitted with a 300bhp Rover V8, a real test of heat management – big engines in confined spaces are renowned for overheating.

And it will be HOT this summer in the paddock at Shelsley!

Products featured are:

Kenlow Electric Cooling Fans – EWP Electric Water Pump– Thermo-Tec Exhaust Lagging

KENLOWE

The benefits of installing an electric fan:

Engine/heater warms up faster

Only runs when required – maintains an optimum engine temperature for better performance/economy

Does not take power from the crank – allows free revving

Does not spray and cause drowned electrics

Classic    – cars not designed for modern traffic – overheating can cause boiling/burst radiator hoses (which can be old and hard to obtain) and engine damage (at the least, inconvenient!).

Replica and Kit – often have special cooling needs.  Radiator often smaller than engine design, radiator often too far from the engine belt-driven fan.

Notes:

Kenlowe can be fitted in addition to existing fan.

Belt driven fans are slow when most needed.

Kenlowe are continuously rated – many  car electric fans are designed for intermittent use.

 4 x 4 often have belt driven fans – noise/fuel performance

EWP PUMPS

The benefits of installing an Electric Water Pump:

Replace and out perform belt driven pumps.

Engine/heater warms up faster

Only runs when required – maintains an optimum engine temperature for better performance/economy

Does not take power from the crank – allows free revving

Notes:

Running speed independent of engine speed.

High water flow

Can be controlled by engine temperature/need

Can be set to continue after engine stops to deal with heat build up

Increase in power and torque, especially at high revs.

Thermo-Tec Exhaust Wrap (lagging) – Insulation

The benefits of insulating the exhaust/manifold:

Reduces under bonnet temperatures – allowing the engine intake to receive a cooler charge

Retaining heat in the exhaust pipes, velocity stays high which improves the scavenging effect

Gives protection from burns.
