Aston Martin overview
Post-war, the modern Aston Martin Company was the result of the purchase of both Aston Martin and Lagonda by David Brown, a tractor and gear manufacturer from Huddersfield. Aston had a promising prototype called the 'Atom' and Lagonda had a six-cylinder engine designed by Willie Watson under the eye of W.O.Bentley. The resulting car was clad in a body with long bonnet and sweeping wings designed by Frank Feeley who had been the stylist at Lagonda. The new car was called the Aston Martin 2-litre Sports but has since become known as the DB1. It only had a four-cylinder engine and after 14 cars was replaced by the six-cylinder DB2, followed by the DB2/4, the DB Mark III, DB4 (which had a new engine), DB4GT, DB5, DB6, DBS, DBSV8 (another new engine), AMV8 and Vantage, V8 Vantage and Volante and so on to the modern day. Aston Martin has been owned and run over the years by a series of remarkable people, but in 1987 it was bought by Ford, who ran it until 2007 when it was sold to a consortium led by David Richards of Prodrive.
